Sicily 02:43
Sicily are you ready for this body? In the heat I can only run so far But run I do Through the flutes Through the stares I'm taking off I'm out the room Drive me to the station! Let me get away! Drive me to the station! Help me get away... Who cares who started the game? Having built this house you should know why I'm reluctant to explain Household are you ready for a shake up? The rules say I can only run so far But run I do Through the flutes Through the stares I'm taking off I'm out the room Drive me to the station! Let me get away! Drive me to the station! Help me get away... Who cares who started the game? Having built this house you should know why I'm reluctant to explain

Everything was level it seemed to them What's possible, what's possible was opening And dangerous, dangerous ideas start to trickle through As time moves, time moves as it was meant to And they let go, they let go of what they were holding The break, the break in the wheel was dissolving Transcendence was stood next to water (There's no way I'll ever...) There's no There's no going back There's no There's no going back
3.
Run True 03:34
Your surface Sitting proud Feel the edges with a toe Stroke by stroke Step by step You have learned to move You are told You can be Anything you choose Stroke by stroke You are filed down Imperceptibly until You run true You run true You run true You run true

Through broken up FaceTimes She's asking for shelter I've picked up an armful And need somewhere to put all the care You come through the crackle And we exchange stories But I'm desperate for contact Here's a scheme we could try for ourselves You light up my pocket To show me a window And thanks to your framing I can see harmony on your street But when cameras aren't rolling I imagine her leaving You just have to wait now For your next nearly-guest on a bike You light up my pocket To tell me what happened And all of the hopefuls And the trees and the news couldn't watch Powerless and with no fingers No fingers Powerless and with no outlets no No outlets And with no outlets No outlets

Asher: Don't you come back for me Don't you cone back for me Don't you come back for me Don't you come back for me Don't you come back for me Don't you come back for me I won't wait for you Rubie: He tells you it's something that'll make you calmer Skips the countdown Transports you to the eighth floor window You catch glimpses of other stories But you're alone They kindly bring you bread and water It seemed like an obvious promise Your protection But it's contingent on the fates' kindness Both: Don't you come back for me Don't come back for me Don't come back for me Don't come back for me Don't come back for me Don't come back for me Don't you come back for me Don't you Aghhh Noooooo!

about

Whatever Cage is Rubie's most direct work yet; queering a sonic palette of alt pop, folk rock and experimental electronic to demand political change in the wake of the pandemic. Sicily is a pained demand to be busted out and driven away from her oppressors; Transcendence Next to Water paints a idealised portrait of centrist dads radicalised into acid communism, and Don't Come Back, featuring Rubie's old friend and icon of the Brighton drag scene Asher Fynn, is a call from the afterlife to stand up and fight for medical justice.

The cover art, made in collaboration with Nicolette Clara Iles, is inspired by the 8 of swords tarot card, which usually depicts a bound and blindfolded figure who can't see a way out of a situation. Nicolette, whose artwork explores spiritual practice through the lens of chronic illness, shot the cover and press photos over a zoom call, honouring the many people for whom the pandemic is not over; the immunocompromised, those living with physical and mental health repercussions, and those who lost family, blood and chosen.
